Last year, a Web3 team decided to hire a Web2-native copywriter as their content production became increasingly important to them. They found one, an experienced and persuasive writer. But there was a problem: the writer was not familiar with our ways—the ‘culture.’
The team decided to train the writer, so they set up a 12-hour course to help him settle in. But even with this, the writer still found it hard to blend in. Days went by, weeks, and even months, but the writer’s content still didn’t match that of someone familiar with the Web3 space.
Sadly, after 5 weeks with the team, the writer resigned, leaving the team with nothing in return for their investment but thousands of dollars, efforts, and resources down the drain. The team in context here is Unfungible. When sharing this experience, the founder, Leon revealed that their reason for this hire was because they needed someone with more experience and competence.
Unfortunately, as it turned out, they learned one valuable lesson: An understanding of this space is the most important experience. If you’re reading this, please listen:
Do not take your knowledge about this space for granted. It is your biggest asset. Don’t ever stop nurturing it. It is equally as important as the skills you have. In fact, it will open more doors for you than your skills alone. Make it a priority to always expand your knowledge and pair it with competence in the skills you have. Founders want competence and experience, but from people who are grounded in the culture.
So, my advice to you, my fren, is never to pass up the chance to align yourself with the ways of this space. If it requires you to be a degen, be it but don’t lose sight of your values. You’re not an average degen; you build fire shit and change your life.
Regardless of what you are—a writer, a designer, or a developer cherish your knowledge, nurture it and put it to good use. Have a fun-filled weekend.
